Tire shreds are
usually uniformly graded, with the maximum shred size of a particular sample
depending on the method used to process the waste tires. Figure 1 contains
typical gradation curves for tire shreds with 1-in, 3-in, and 12-in maximum
particle sizes.

Procedures

Gradation is
determined using a sieve shaker and the procedures for soils given in ASTM
D 422. This standard specifies sample size by weight, and the specific
gravity of tire shreds is less than half that of other soils, so a sample of
tire shreds can be half the weight given in the ASTM procedure. The sample
size does need to be large enough to be representative of tire shred particle
sizes.
