What is it?

Steel and glass belted waste tires are cut into 2 in. to 12 in. pieces.

  • Lightweight fill for embankment construction on weak foundations
  • Retaining wall and bridge abutment backfill
  • Insulation to limit frost penetration
  • Drainage layers for roads and landfills

Properties

  • Generally uniformly graded
  • Specific gravity less than half the values obtained for soils commonly used as aggregate
  • Water doesn't affect compaction properties
  • Low earth pressure
  • Compressible
  • Greater permeability than most soils
  • Good thermal insulator
  • Little effect on groundwater quality
