Township 31 MD, Maine

    The Township 31 MD project was was on Route 9 between Bangor and Calais, and was similar to the North Yarmouth project.  Table 1 lists the thickness of each layer of material in the test and control sections.  Figure 1 gives a cross section of the project, and figure 2 shows the layout of each section described in table 1.

    Compaction was completed most effectively with a vibratory tamping foot and a vibratory smooth drum roller.  These two compaction methods worked equally well, but compaction with a bulldozer wasn't as effective.
